Driving Sustainability: HEC’s Role In Building Australia’s Longest EV Network

The Challenge

Synergy, Horizon Power and the WA State Government embarked on an ambitious project to create Australia’s longest Electric Vehicle (EV) charging network. Spanning 110 charging points across 49 remote and urban locations from Mundrabilla to Kununurra, the project posed unique challenges, including environmental sensitivities, site accessibility and diverse stakeholder needs. HEC was tasked with civil, electrical and commissioning works at 12 key sites, requiring innovative, tailored solutions to overcome these obstacles.

The Solution

  1. Community Engagement
Partnered with Local Government Authorities, promoted local supply chains and conducted community education sessions about EV technology to ensure acceptance and awareness.
  2. Stakeholder Communication
Maintained transparent collaboration with stakeholders, ensuring alignment at every stage of the project.
  3. Environmental Management
Addressed site-specific challenges with tailored solutions, such as mitigating environmental impacts and optimising designs to suit diverse terrains and conditions.

The Result

HEC successfully completed and energised the initial sites of the WA EV Network, setting the stage for a seamless rollout across Western Australia. The project’s early phases offered valuable insights that improved the efficiency of subsequent installations. By utilising local supply chains, we supported regional businesses and economies. Advancing Western Australia’s transition to sustainable transportation by creating critical infrastructure for E V adopting also gave us invaluable experience for future civil projects and allowed us to demonstrate our commitment to innovation, collaboration and environmentally responsible practices throughout the 24-month project. With a total project value of approximately $23 million, this initiative not only connects WA’s vast regions but also paves the way for a greener, more sustainable future in transportation.
